About the Document
This document is intended to provide some assistance to both new and experienced sellers on internet auction sites.
Listed are links to various tools that may assist a seller in preparing templates and/or organising photos for use in an item listing.
Some of these tools we have used in the past and still use today, so we know from experience that they work if time is given to learning how to use them to maximise their benefit.
Also included are links to some useful aids that will assist you, the seller.
It needs to be emphasised that what is listed in this document are not “secrets” or anything of the kind. Everything included in this document is freely available on the internet as you will see.
What we have done is provide this information in a simple and easy to follow document and save you the time of having to research this material yourself.
As they say “knowledge is power” – the key is finding that knowledge which we have tried to do for you so that you can get on with doing what you joined ebay (or another site) for – to sell and make some money on the internet.
Having said this, read and understand the following:
ANYONE can sell on the internet, but
NOT everyone CAN sell on the internet
(Understanding this statement will go a long way to increasing your
chances of making a success of your selling experience)
· Anyone can join an internet auction site
· Anyone can list an item for sale on an internet auction site
· Anyone can post an item sold on an internet auction site
BUT
Does everyone selling on the internet make a profit ???
I am here to tell you that the answer to this question is - NO !!!
One of the main reasons an item may not get the price you want or not sell at all is due to the way the listing has been presented.
A poorly prepared listing may be the result of:
- layout is visually unattractive and/or difficult to read
- no item description
- no photos
- item description is written in poor English and is hard to understand with numerous spelling and grammatical errors
- photos used are of poor quality and do not clearly depict the item for sale
- too much information
- ambiguity of what the final cost will be after the listing has ended – is GST included or added afterwards ?
- no postage costs – many potential buyers will simply not bid if they do not know what the postage and handling costs will be
As a seller, you need to minimise the reasons for an item not selling before you have even listed the item.
Remember, as a seller you could be competing with dozens, if not hundreds of other sellers offering the same or similar item to what you are selling, so you need to ensure that your listing will stand out from the rest.
I am a firm believer in checking out the “opposition” – by this I mean looking at how someone else selling a similar item to me has prepared their listing with the aim of finding a way to make my listing look just that little bit better.
This could mean putting borders around my photos to make them stand out in the gallery when potential buyers are doing a category search.
Similarly, it could mean putting borders around my text in the listing or using a template theme border to complement and help highlight what I am listing.
All this will become more familiar to you as time goes by and as you gain experience as a seller. Experience is the best teacher – just learn from your mistakes and avoid repeating them and learn from your successes so that you can refine and improve upon them for future listings.
Remember, every seller had to start somewhere, and you can bet that all of them (including myself) made plenty of mistakes in the beginning until they found a pattern or system that works best for them and with which they are now comfortable.
