Rosemary Clooney 1928-2002

Born May 23rd 1928 in Maysville, Kentucky Rosemary Clooney's childhood was far from ideal. Her father Andy was an alcoholic her mother Frances worked hard to keep her family together but was often away from home as her job demanded. When Rosemary was thirteen her mother left taking younger brother Nick with her but leaving behind Rosemary and her younger sister Betty. Andy looked after his daughters as best he could but in 1945 he went out one night and never returned.

The young sisters were left to fend for themselves, they auditioned for a singing job at a radio station in Cincinnati and earned a regular radio spot, which saved them from poverty. Bandleader Tony Pastor heard the sisters on radio and invited them to join his orchestra, they toured with this outfit until 1948 when Betty quit. Rosemary remained with pastor until 1949 when she too left and headed for the bright lights of New York.

On arrival in New York the now 21 year old Clooney signed a contract with Columbia Records and in 1951 recorded the song which would make her into a household name. From all accounts it took some persuading to convince her to sing "Come On-A-My House" but music fans loved it and it was soon a huge hit.

Next came a radio show which Rosemary co-hosted with the ever popular Bing Crosby quickly followed by movie roles, most notably "White Christmas". In 1953 she married actor Jose Ferrer with whom she had five children between 1955 and 1960. Rosemary lead an amazingly busy life, television, radio, recording and acting as well as bringing up five children,as this hectic lifestyle began to take it's toll Clooney became addicted to prescription drugs. She divorced Ferrer in 1961; they got back together before splitting again in 1967. In 1968 the singer suffered a very public breakdown she admitted herself to a psychiatric hospital and it would be almost ten years before she returned to the limelight.

Bing Crosby invited Rosemary to join him on his final tour in 1976; she accepted and was warmly welcomed by her fans. She embraced this new chance with enthusiasm and continued to record and perform live concerts until a year before her death from lung cancer on June 29th 2002.
