DESCRIPTION
Psychology - An Introduction
Fifth Edition

Preface
So swift has been the recent pace of psychological research that each revision of Psychology: An Introduction is in essence a brand?new book. Perhaps the most eloquent evidence of the knowledge explosion will be found in the index of this Fifth Edition, where a very high proportion of the topics listed?all essential to an understanding of what psychology is all about in the mid? 1980s?were not even a part of any psychologist\'s vocabulary when the first edition appeared. Thus our chief task in preparing this edition was to answer some urgent questions raised by the rapid advance of the science.
We have always aimed to serve instructors and students receptive to a book that, as one journal review of the Fourth Edition put it, \"combines brevity, clarity, rigor, and relevance.? But how could we preserve brevity while still doing justice to all the new knowledge plus the abiding basics of the old? How could we preserve rigor and relevance without sacrificing clarity?
To keep the book brief, we have continued to seek extreme economy in writing style and to concentrate more than ever on the main thrust and meaning of psychology?the basic principles that the Tyler study (page 135) found were remembered longest by students?rather than the unnecessary terminology and extraneous details that Tyler found to be quickly forgotten. To keep the book rigorous and relevant, we have constantly asked ourselves: Of all the knowledge that now exists, what elements are most important to students?both those preparing themselves for advanced courses and those who will have no further exposure to psychology?
We have made it our top priority to foster an appreciation of such momentous findings as the brain\'s marvellous complexity and versatility, the ingenious ways people learn and remember, the way individual differences contribute to humanity\'s richness and create many of its misunderstandings, and the basic message of social psychology?which is that no person is an island and that who you are depends largely on whom you are with. If we can help students grasp the significance of these principles?and disabuse them of some of the false and often harmful beliefs about human behavior popular among people who have never taken a psychology course?we will be gratified.
Because doing all this has become such a formidable task, the two original authors are happy to be joined in this Fifth Edition by a third collaborator, Julius Segal.
Changes in the Fifth Edition
Besides adding many scores of new studies that have pushed psychology\'s frontiers into new ground since 1980, we have made substantial changes in the structure and presentation of the book.
