Peggy Lee
1920 - 2002

Norma Delores Egstrom changed her name to Peggy Lee in her teens when working as a singer for a small radio station. Her childhood was apparently difficult and unstable but she began singing with orchestras and big bands. In 1941 she was singing with a quartet in Chicago Benny Goodman was impressed enough to hire her. They worked together for two years during which time they recorded a number of hits including ‘Somebody else Is Taking My place' and ‘I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good'. Peggy also appeared in her first movie with Goodman singing ‘Why Don't You Do It Right?'

In 1943 Peggy married Goodman's guitarist Dave Barbour and dropped out of the music scene for a short time. On her return her popularity started to rise and she soon had a string of hit tunes to her credit. Success on the silver screen also achieved by the talented Miss Lee with an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress in the movie ‘Pete Kelly's Blues'

Her best known songs include ‘Fever', ‘Golden Earrings', ‘Manana','It's A Good Day' and ‘Is That All There Is'. Peggy's talent as a songwriter were displayed when she wrote many of the songs for Disney's ‘Lady And the Tramp' she also sang and starred as the voices of several characters in this movie. A truly creative spirit Peggy wrote poems, painted and designed greeting cards.

Despite the fact that she had know hits since the 60's Peggy Lee continued to entertain her fans well into the 90's she sadly passed away in January 2002.
