Patsy Cline

Despite her premature death thirty-five years ago the name Patsy Cline is instantly recognisable to all country music fans. Born September 8th 1932 in Virginia, Virginia Patterson Hensley began performing as a small child of four. As she grew she learned to play piano and sing, and often performed with her church choir.

After leaving school in 1948 Cline began singing in local nightclubs with Bill Peer and his Melody Boys, she was moderately successful so she decided to make the move to Nashville in the hope of getting a recording contract, but the time wasn't right. For a while she danced in clubs to make a living before returning home to resume singing with her former band.

In 1954 Cline returned to Nashville and signed her first record deal with the 4 Star Sales Co. She began recording in 1955 but had little success until the February 1958 release of "Walkin' After Midnight", which made it to the top of the country charts and also to number 17 on the pop charts.

Further hits were slow in coming, as the contract she had signed restricted the songs she could record. It wasn't till she signed with Decca in 1959 that her career surged forward again, with the help of producer Owen Bradley she began finding songs that suited her voice. In 1960 she became a performer at Grand Old Opry a year later recorded her second hit "I Fall To Pieces" which went all the way to the top of the country charts. Her next hit also in 1961 was called "Crazy" and was written by Willie Nelson. On a sour note Cline was involved in a major car accident in 1961 but she recovered well and had returned to the music scene as successful as ever.

Tragedy struck again this time with fatal consequences when Patsy Cline was involved in a plane crash on March 5th 1963. Her final record was released after her death, titled "Sweet Dreams" it made it into the top ten. Despite her brief recording career she has had a lasting influence on female country singers for more than three decades.
