Patti Page

Born Clara Anne Fowler on November 8th 1927 in Tulsa, Okalahoma, she became the most popular female singer of the 50's. Her career started on local radio in her hometown "The Meet Patti Page Show' was sponsored by the Page Milk Company. As well as this she performed on weekends with Art Klauser and the Oklahomans. When she left the radio show she decided to keep the name Patti Page.

Next came a tour with the Jimmy Joy Band, who's manager Jack Rael had heard Patti's radio show and invited her to sing with the group. Jack went on to become Patti's manager for more than four decades. The tour ended in Chicago where Patti did some work with Benny Goodman, which led to her first recording contract with Mercury Records. In 1947 she had her first hit with "Confess" this was the first time a singer overdubbed her own backing harmony. This was done to cut costs but it turned out to be a great success.

1949 brought the release of "With My Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming" which was made using the same overdubbing method; this was Patti's first record to sell 1 million copies. Next followed her first number one hit "All My Love" and then came "Tennessee Waltz" one of the biggest hits ever by a female artist. The hits continued to flow until well into the 60's, Patti also appeared in her own television show in 1955 and in a number of movies including the 1960 release "Elmer Gantry" and "Boys Night Out".

Towards the end of the 60's her popularity as a recording star began to wane, but this talented singer continued to be a popular concert and cabaret star until the 90's and in recent times has been honoured with many awards from the music industry.
