Mel Torme

Born in Chicago on September 13th 1925, Mel Torme embarked on his musical career before he started school. He was singing at the Blackhawk club at the tender age of four, it is thought that he fell in love with the drums at the same time. Next on the list came radio acting, at the age of nine and having a song published by the time he was fifteen.

On leaving school at 16 Mel joined the Chico Marx band as a singer/arranger and sometimes drummer. The band broke up in 1943 and he continued to write songs with Bob Wells, their smash hit "The Christmas Song" was released by Nat King Cole in 1945 and is still popular today. The pair would collaborate on more than 200 songs.

During the war years Mel hooked up with a vocal quartet made up of college kids, he took on the job of arranger and became the lead singer, they were known as the "Mel-Tones". The group made several records, often backed by "The Artie Shaw Band". In 1946 Mel decided to go out on his own, he became known as the "velvet fog" which he apparently disliked as some people changed it to the "velvet frog". He had a number one hit in 1949 with "Careless Love", but by the early 50's ballad singers were less in demand as rock and roll began to make itself heard.

This waning popularity allowed Mel to turn to his true interest, jazz and from the mid 50's he concentrated almost entirely on this music genre. In the 60's he recorded some pop tunes but they were not well accepted by the public, however he continued to record and perform great jazz tracks for many years. In 1982 he was awarded the Grammy for Best Male Jazz Vocalist, he did regular live performances until suffering a stroke in August 1996. He passed away on June 5th 1999.
