WHICH UNDERLAYS ARE REALLY MADE IN AUSTRALIA?

This is truely one of my most asked question. The other day I had a look at the first few pages of Google and that prompted me to add this column to my information. I am 99.9% certain and if I have made a mistake, I'll be the first to apologise. Without giving specific names lets say there are ten main contenders in the Australian pie. I know them all pretty well for reason like, some use to work for Jannese's mother, others use to work for me, some set up a similiar arrangement to me and use to follow me around in shopping centres, another who also liquidated his large company like I did, started on Good Morning Australia at the same time as I did. Yet with another my warehouse was not far from his. I suppose in a small industry like we are in it is in you best interest to know the opposition.

Now if buying a truely Australian made quality product is important be conscious of some clever advertising ploys.

• Some companies will emphasise proudly 100% Australian owned. Opps made in china.
• The Company name has the word "Australian" in it which gives the impression of Australian made products.
• The words “designed in Australia” can be confusing.
• One used the cliche of all the products use are Australian material. When I question where they were made quoted "it's a 100% Australian product, assembled off shore"!!!!
• The other week I was offered 6 million magnets from a man who had some considerable time ago purchase the magnets and all manufacturing tables from a company who use used the concept of 100% Australian made as one of their strongest points. I did not know that they had moved their manufacture off shore. I rang the company and it was explained that the product was moved off shore to keep the prices down to the public. That was a much more acceptable answer than, "Australian product assembled off shore".
• Some other companies in their text state how the product has been personally designed by them. This also gives you the impression of being made here.

Another interesting point asked is why some companies can give so much away. The reality is that they pay so little for it in the first place because its Chinese made. I was recently approached and ask it I would like to buy underlay's at wholesale from a company who imports from china. A Queen underlay was offered to me for under $40 and that's with him making a profit. I have previously inquired and found that I can purchase woolen underlay's (in very large quantities of course) off shore for much less than what I manufacture my own cotton underlay for.

Another interesting comment I get is "I paid a lot of money for mine so it must be good". The reality is that she paid for a Chinese made product that has been outrageously marked up. I shake my head at some companies that charge outrageous prices for their underlays. They use fancy words or over rate the gauss of the magnets to mislead people to thinking that their product is so much more expensive to manufacture. Some companies use terms like infra red magnets to make their product sound more expensive. Most ceramic magnets are infra red. An American football player recently emailed me asking why are my products on sale so much cheaper, are they less effective than the more expensive brands. My reply; Brock Im just not a greedy boy. I have reduced my prices in the thought that I will have a greater turnover. I try am supply a quality product that is affordable to the general public. Better to get a lot of a little than little of a lot. When they buy it from me they are not getting it from somewhere else. A little bit in my pocket is better than none at all. Also as I am now a small family business I don't have outrageous overheads to deal with either.

As for quality control. Jannese inspects my bathroom cupboards almost daily to make sure I keep them neat and tidy (I hate that, don't trust me to make the products for you). With her eye to detail in mind you're getting a good quality controlled product.

Cameron's buyers beware about WOOL: I recently had a little look through the other magnetic products that are on sale on the internet and I would like to respectfully put forward some information that may assist you in making an informed decision. Some things that are glaringly obvious to me may be lost to those with limited experience in the magnetic therapy. I put it in point form for convenience.

• If you want the maximum magnetic therapy from your product DO NOT purchase a woolen underlay. I was one of the first to advertise on Good Morning Australia (channel 10). To my horror I would watch my competitors as they advocate the virtues of their woolen underlay range. They would quote "Our finest thick woolen fleece", and turn a real negative into a positive. The fact is that SHEEP have wool on their back to INSULATE them from the cold. So it WOOL is an INSULATOR, it will in turn insulate you from anything that is on the other side of the wool (the magnet). In simple terms it just reduces the therapeutic effect of the magnet. Pretty simple when you think about it. I'm not saying it won't work; it just will not work as efficiently as a cotton underlay.
• As a major competitor in the market place I have made a point of watching my competition. As far as internet products are concerned most of the products are manufactured in china (Not all of them as I personally know the manufacturer of one range). Like the old saying you pay for what you get. All my sewn products are made on the Gold Coast by a team cottage based sewers. As for the Jewellery, of course it's made in china; you just can't make it for the price here.
• I have also noticed that quite a few of the magnetic products on are sold on the internet that sells a multitude of other products. My question is how much expertise do they have in the magnetic field. My CORE business is magnets, I love magnets, I live, eat and sleep, dreaming of damn magnets. My house is full of magnets. Magnets have been my life for the last 8 years. As for my wife Jannese she has been involved in magnetic therapy products for over 40 years. Her parents have been selling magnetic therapy products for a lot longer than that. If fact many of the modern day retailers who claim to be the first were splinters from Jannese's parents.
• Without boring you much further, some people may ask, "Where did this man get his experience from"? Over the last 8 years have you every walked through your neighbourhood shopping centre and seen a magnetic therapy stand set up in the middle of the aisle. If yes, well that was my company. We at one time were coordinating over 50 staff rotating weekly in every major shopping centre in both Australia and New Zealand. Today I only have a couple of staff and concentrate in Gold Coast and Brisbane shopping centres. Sometimes traveling up to Cairns and back.
