Weigel's Journal of Fashion, a monthly subscription journal that claimed to be the first fashion magazine to be designed, published and printed in Australia was started in 1880. It included illustrated fashion articles, housekeeping hints and serialized fiction. Johanna Weigel, after requests from friends, started to cut patterns from her own clothes and give them away. The easy-to-follow instructions for measuring, cutting and sewing made the patterns popular and their increasing success led her and husband Oscar to start their fashion business in 1877 in premises in Lennox Street, Richmond. They imported all their printing machines and tissue paper and soon established offices in central Melbourne and Sydney and agencies throughout Australia and New Zealand. Although Madame Weigel died on 10 January 1940, the journal continued for some time. This edition of the journal contains knitting patterns, sewing projects, crochet edgings, household tips, recipes, short fiction and great ads for Arrid cream deoderant, Kayser, Silver Star Starch, State Bank of Vic, Lincoln underwear & many more. The magazine is fully intact but does have some minor stain/ discolouration marks on the cover and on page 18 as if something was spilled. This hasnt affected the print quality or your ability to read the magazine. There are also a couple of minor tear marks on the front cover. |
