Fats Domino

Born in New Orleans on May 10th,1929, Antoine Domino was taught to play the piano by a much older brother-in-law. There are two theories about how he became known as ‘Fats' the first is the obvious one relating to his size.The second is that it was after the record ‘The Fat Man' was released early in his career, either way the name stuck.

Fats left school at fourteen, he worked in a factory by day and performed in clubs at night, he was spotted by Dave Bartholomew of Imperial Records in 1949 and signed a recording contract. His first record, the above mentioned “The Fat Man” was a hit on the R&B charts and several more hits followed. In 1955 Fat's released the song that saw him cross over on to the pop charts ‘Ain't that A Shame' reached the number ten spot, people were starting to listen to rock and roll! Singer Pat Boone released a cover version of the song; it reached the number one spot and launched the singer's career.

What followed is music history, between 1955 and 1963 Fat's had top 40 hits no less than thirty five times, his signature song ‘Blueberry Hill' which reached number two on the pop chart was released in 1956, along with five other top forty hits in the same year. Fats appeared in the rock and roll movie ‘The Girl Can't Help It' in 1957, he sang his hit ‘Blue Monday'. ‘Whole Lotta Loving', ‘I Want To Walk You Home' and ‘Be My Guest' were all released in the late 50's.

The final top ten hit for Fats ‘Walking To New Orleans' was in 1960, he had a top forty hit in 1963 with ‘Red Sails In The Sunset'. He did release a cover of the Beatles “Lady Madonna” in 1968 but it didn't make the charts. Despite having no further hits Fats continued to perform in both America and Britain entertaining his many fans as late as the 1990's when ill health forced him into retirement.
